Regular dental check-ups should start quite early. It is even recommended for the first visit to take place about first year of age - after first teeth have grown. Apart from checking the facial and oral cavity development, parents are informed about proper diet and care of decidious teeth.
Cause of tooth decay lies mainly in diet and care mistakes, which still are made despite common access to information on the subject. This special need for proper care of teeth which have just come through (both decidious and permanent) is caused by the fact that they are especially prone to tooth decay.
It is due to their specific anatomy and histology including low bone mineralization in comparison with adult teeth.
A very common and serious dental problem of early childhood is the early tooth decay in two or three-year-old children. It is especially acute form of tooth decay, which may lead to tooth destruction within a few months and need for early extractions. It is a truly sad moment when you have to extract new decidious teeth in a 3-year-old child due to decay complications. That's why when parents notice any changes on teeth in their children (stains etc) they should consult a dentist immediately and do not postpone this. Dental treatment of children is very difficult, costly and shocking both for children and their parents. Let's prevent such situations.
You need to be cautious also when a child is older. A very important moment is change of dentition. First permanent teeth (usually molars, known as "six") appear about 6 year of age. They are usually preceded by decidious teeth falling. That's why this particular moment is often overlooked and these are teeth which require special care. Being the last ones in the tooth arch usually are not cleaned properly and their rich form of chewing area fosters food deposits - decay forming factor. So these teeth are very quickly attacked by tooth decay. These teeth are lost the earliest and, it must be said, it is due to lack of care during childhood. In case of regular check-ups, the moment of appearance of six molars is not overlooked and fresh teeth are protected against tooth decay by means of sealing. Sealed teeth need to be regularly checked, to see if the seal is leakproof. Similar protective procedures are also recommended for other new teeth.
Proper dental care in early age pays off in adult life. Children teeth may be saved from tooth decay. Cost of prophylaxys is much lower than cost of treatment.
Remember that regular check-ups will save your time, stress, money and suffering of your child.
