Nowadays orthodontic treatment is possible not only in adolescents, but also in adults. Sometimes orthodontic treatment is the preliminary step to prosthetic or implantological treatments. Orthodontic braces correct and treat malocclusions. Force acting on teeth and jaws may move teeth and give them proper direction.
There are moveable and permanent orthodontic braces.
The movable ones are inserted and taken away from the mouth by a patient. They are the most efficient in adolescence when teenagers and children develop and grow. Depending on the type of malocclusion, there are plenty of modifications in the braces.
Time of treatment depends on type of occlusal problem, age of the patient and number of hours when the braces are worn. It is not enough to wear them only at night. For the visible effects to be seen, the braces should be worn 6-8 hours during the day and all night.
Permanent appliances include various types of brackets (metal, ceramic, plastic) which are cemented on teeth. The brackets are fixed in the clinic by a doctor and the patient cannot remove the braces during treatment time.
Permanent braces act with a force on teeth 24/7 - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Effects are quickly visible, even after 2-4 months.
Metal and ceramic brackets act the same and perform the same function. They differ only in aesthetics. Ceramic brackets are of teeth colour and so are not so visible.
Permanent braces require more discipline and very precise oral hygiene. The patient is informed about teeth brushing methods and about special brushes for the purpose for the brushing to be effective.
Prior to fixing permanent braces, all teeth must be treated and tooth plaque removed. During treatment once or twice a month professional teeth cleaning is performed.
Permanent braces are good solution in treating detained teeth. After surgical uncovering of a detained tooth, it is connected with permanent braces by special traction and is inserted to the teeth arch, in proper place.
As it was mentioned earlier - patient's age is not an obstacle for orthodontic treatment. Condition of teeth and periodontium is important here. That’s why people aged 40 or 50 also may wear them.
